Orthodontics

DEFINITION
SCHEDULE AND PROFESSIONALS

Orthodontics is a specialist branch of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis, prevention, and correction of mispositioned teeth and jaws (malocclusion). Orthodontics can also address the modification of facial growth, known as Dentofacial Orthopedics.

The orthodontic treatment can take several months up to a few years, gradually adjusting the alignment and position of the teeth and jaws. In cases where malocclusion is severe, maxillofacial surgery should be incorporated into the treatment plan.

Orthodontic treatment helps improve overall oral health. In providing a balanced occlusion, solving crowding issues and repositioning of adequate periodontal levels, orthodontic therapy directly influences the ability of a patient to sustain proper tooth brushing. Misaligned teeth are difficult to clean properly and are more prone to develop carious lesions and/or periodontal disease. It can also accelerate tooth wear, causing tooth sensitivity and the need for a less conservative treatment.
